Aeschylus, Eumenides (The kindly ones) The sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi. In the background the three-legged prophetic seat (the tripod or throne), suspended over the deep steaming fissure that is the heart of the sanctuary, is visible within the sanctuary building, through its open doors, which are at the top of a set of steps. Eumenides Inside Apollo ’s temple at Delphi , the ancient goddesses of parricidal vengeance, the Erinnyes , surround the sleeping and tired Orestes . At the order of Apollo , Orestes flees Delphi as well to seek protection elsewhere: more precisely, in the temple of Athena in the goddess’ city of Athens . Summary Plot Overview Many years after king Agamemnon's murder at the hands of his wife Clytamnestra and her lover Aigisthos, his son Orestes returns home with Pylades to mourn at his grave. Orestes has been living in exile and has come back to Argos in secret, sent by an oracle of Apollo.
